Granby Roll

No-GiGi

This drill teaches the fundamental Granby roll, a key BJJ movement for re-guarding, escaping bad positions, and transitioning defensively while protecting your neck.

Drill Steps

1

Start seated on a mat line.

  • Place your butt directly on the line
  • Position your hands in front or behind for balance
2

Initiate the roll by falling to one shoulder.

  • Tuck your knees towards your chest
  • Make your body compact into a tight ball
3

Elevate your hips to drive the roll.

  • Place the toes of your bottom foot on the ground
  • Push off the floor, elevating through your shoulder blades
4

Complete the rotation to a seated position.

  • Roll over your shoulder blade past the opposite side
  • Land in a stable, neutral seated position
5

Check alignment and repeat the drill.

  • Ensure you always roll on your shoulder blade, not your neck
  • Practice tucking into a ball for smoother movement
