Armbar Escape
No-GiGi
This drill by Craig Jones teaches a methodical escape from an armbar when your opponent is actively trying to break your arm over their hip, focusing on creating time and controlling their leg.
Drill Steps
1
Start flat on your back with an armbar applied.
- Recognize your arm is in danger of being broken
- Feel your opponent's weight on your hip
2
Lift one shoulder off the ground to create space.
- This buys you time against the immediate arm break
- Change your body angle to deny their primary breaking hip
3
Slide your elbow under your opponent's leg near their ankle.
- Create a strong structure with your forearm
- This provides a 'cross face up' control point
4
Keep your elbow tight to your body and on the mat.
- Prevent them from overpowering your structure
- This creates a stable base to counter their leg pressure
5
As your opponent drags your arm, flatten your back.
- Anticipate them trying to break your arm over their other hip
- Use their movement to initiate your escape
6
Push their legs to the other side of your body.
- Remove their leg leverage from your trapped arm
- This clears the breaking point from your elbow
